Report from the Safeway Sale

We hit the Safeway sale (see below) yesterday, and left with 15 bottles for $135, all included. $9/bottle for some interesting stuff is not to be sneezed at, and we highly recommend stopping by the Safeway near you to see what it is on offer. (Our nearest Safeway is in St. Helena.)

The sale promised 30% off all non-sparkling wines over $20. We found that to be not quite the case. A few bottles north of $20 were not discounted. However, a great many bottles under $20 (and over) were discounted much more than 30%. Also, a few shopping carts were filled with wines allegedly 50% off, but in some cases much more so.

Here are wines that we bought or that caught our eye on the shelves. Some of these we have had before, others not. All seemed to be promising wines at reasonable prices. See what you think, and do please tell us what you find at your Safeway.

Montes Alpha Syrah (Chile), $11.25
Sanford Chardonnay (Central Coast), $16.79
Buehler Cabernet (Napa Valley), $22

Safeway sale

Alert! Safeway is advertising 30% off all wines over $20 (with a further 10% off with purchase of 6 btls or more). Sparkling wine is excluded. Sale runs through January 11, 2009. We don't know if the sale is only in the Bay Area, all of California, or all across the country, but it's worth taking a look.

We shall endeavor to visit Safeway ASAP, and we will report back on interesting finds that will appeal at the lower prices.

If you beat us to it, please let us know what you find, and what you think of it.

Post-script: we think this sale is an indicator of things to come, or already here. North Berkeley recently offered a mixed case of Rhones for less than 50% of full retail. We anticipate deep discounts to continue, especially on higher end bottles. Hear of any good sales or offers? Let us know....
